ABSTRACT

WILEY R.B. 05.03. 1884 Detroit MI/USA 14.05. 1963 Lafayette IN/USA Ralph Benjamin Wiley obtained in 1906 the BS degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor MI. He joined in 1908 Purdue University, West Lafayette IN, as instructor first, and then went through all positions, becoming from 1919 to 1937 professor of sanitary engineering, and then until 1954 professor of civil engineering, Head of the School of Engineering, and director of the Materials Testing Laboratory, from when he was an emeritus. He also served as chairman of the Indiana Stream Pollution Control Board, and was a member of the Indiana Food Control and Water Resources Commission. From 1954 he also was a private consultant at West Lafayette. Wiley was member of the American Society of Engineering Education ASEE, the American Water Works Association AWWA, and of the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, whose director he was from 1941 to 1943, and vice-president from 1947 to 1948. He was awarded Honorary ASCE Membership in 1956. Wiley started his professional career with the city of Columbus OH, as design engineer on water purification and sewage disposal plants. He shortly later joined Purdue’s staff, advancing within a short period to professor of sanitary engineering. To maintain close contact with engineering practice, he spent most of his summers working as consulting engineer for Detroit MI on the development of its sanitary system. He also served as consultant on sanitary drainage and water supply problems for various municipalities. He received a distinguished service award from the Indiana Sewage Works Association in 1947, and was named Engineer of the Year by the Indiana Society of Professional Engineers in 1955. Shortly before his death, the honorary civil engineering fraternity nominated him to its distinguished member. Anonymous (1954). Prof. R.B. Wiley to leave Purdue Engineering School.
