ABSTRACT

BOYER 02.01. 1908 Boise ID/USA 01.09. 1986 Kennebunk ME/USA Marion Clifford Boyer graduated in 1928 with the BS degree from the University of Colorado, Denver CO, and as professional engineer in 1935. In 1947 he received the MS degree in hydraulic engineering from the State University of Iowa, Iowa City IA. From 1928 to 1942 he was in the Water Resources Branch of the US Geological Survey at Washington DC and in the Northwest, then in 1943 with the US Bureau of Yards and Docks as an aviation facilities engineer, from 1943 to 1946 on active duty in the US Naval Reserve as a civil Corps officer, from 1947 to 1956 as an associate professor of mechanics and hydraulics at the University of Iowa, and from 1957 to 1962, he was hydraulic engineer with the State of Indiana. Since then he was natural resources coordinator for Fresno County in California. Boyer was instrumental in the translation of the monthly issued Soviet hydraulics journal Gidrotekhnicheskoe Stroitelstvo, namely the Hydrotechnical Construction. This journal is devoted primarily to the design of hydraulic structures, and summarizes the hydraulic, structural, and soil engineering involved in these projects. The first issue was translated in 1967, with a delay between the Russian and English version of less than six months. Boyer served as translation editor, whose skill in Russian was acquired during his stay at Washington DC. He translated scientific Russian articles for the Office of Naval Intelligence since 1958. Boyer had been previously involved in a historical book on the hydraulic developments at the University of Iowa. He also contributed a chapter to the Handbook of applied hydrology in 1964.
