ABSTRACT

BRATER 07.04. 1912 Saginow MI/USA 29.01. 2003 Ann Arbor MI/USA Ernest Frederick Brater graduated in 1936 with an MS from the University of Michigan, and there obtained the PhD degree in 1938. He was first engaged with flood prediction within the US Army Corps of Engineers, then was involved in dam design with Ayres Co., Ann Arbor, and after World War II joined the University of Michigan at the Lake Hydraulics Laboratory, where he investigated harbour design and wave forces. He was appointed professor of hydraulic engineering there in 1949, after having served in the staff from 1938. Brater has authored and co-authored a number of highly popular books in hydraulic education, mainly directed to students and to hydraulic practice. The following chapters are included in the 1996 edition of the Handbook of hydraulics: 1. Fluid properties and hydraulic units, 2. Hydrostatics, 3. Fundamental concepts of flow, 4. Orifices and gates, 5. Weirs, 6. Pipes, 7. Steady uniform flow in open channels, 8. Open channels with nonuniform flow, 9. High-velocity transitions, 10. Wave motion, 11. Spatially variable and unsteady flow, 12. Measurement of flowing water, 13. Advances in hydraulics using computer technology, 14. Applicable computer programs. The second book of note is Hydrology, written in collaboration with C.O. Wisler (1881-1961). Its main chapters are: Hydrograph, Runoff, Precipitation, Infiltration and soil moisture, Groundwater, Water losses, Semiarid regions, Snow, Floods, and Stream-flow records. Anonymous (1954).
