BRUSH W.W. 28.07. 1874 Orange NJ/USA 25.10. 1962 New York NY/USA William Whitlock Brush graduated in 1893 as civil engineer from New York University, New York NY. He was from 1894 to 1907 engineering assistant and assistant engineer on city water supply projects for Brooklyn NY, until 1910 then engineer with the NY Board of Water Supply on the Catskill System and department engineer of this Board on the design of the City Aqueduct. From 1910 to 1917 he was then deputy chief engineer of the Bureau of Water Supply, Department of Water Supply, Gas & Electricity. He was appointed in 1917 chief engineer, serving from 1919 to 1926 as deputy chief engineer, and taking then again over as chief engineer until his retirement in 1934. Brush was member of the American Society of Civil Engineers ASCE, of the American Water Works Association AWWA, serving as president in 1928, and becoming honorary member in 1937. He also was member and president of the New England Water Works Association, and served as president of the New York University Alumni Association. Brush started his engineering career as assistant on the Brooklyn water supply system, and subsequently designed considerably of New York’s delivery network, including its aqueduct system, from the Catskill Mountains to the city center. After his appointment as chief engineer, he wrote articles on water supply problems and construction projects. After his retirement, he became editor of the Water Works Engineering journal, which was founded in 1847, and so represented one of the first journals in this field.
