ABSTRACT

CEDERGREN 02.01. 1911 Seattle WA/USA 25.02. 1996 Sacramento CA/USA Harry Roland Cedergren received his BS degree in civil engineering from Washington University in 1938, and the MS degree in soil mechanics from Harvard University, Cambridge MA in 1939, under Prof. Arthur Casagrande (1902-1981). He was in 1962 senior materials and research engineer, the California Division of Highways, Sacramento CA, and later there was a consultant. Cedergren was acclaimed for his extensive work in the areas of seepage analysis and drainage design. During a career spanning almost five decades he was active consultant, lecturer and teacher, holding positions with US Corps of Engineers and the California Division of Highways. He was a member of the Transportation Research Board and author of Drainage of highway and airfield pavements. He also noted that engineering works involving water, including dams and levees, can usually be made safe by (1) Keeping the water out of places where it can cause harm by using watertight barriers, and (2) Controlling by drainage methods including filters and drains or relief wells. These basic means have always had their effect both in the past and in the future. The 1962 paper is concerned with filters in hydraulic engineering. The water removing capabilities of two common but distinctly different filter types are analysed by the flow-net technique. Typical solutions and numerical examples are presented to emphasize the importance of boundary conditions and permeability upon the waterremoving capacity. The 1985 work is concerned with the design of drainage systems, which can be of great benefit to mankind if properly designed, and often represent the only way to protect these works from the damaging effects of water.
