ABSTRACT

Malik and Leah were given a class assignment to interview an older person (someone over 50) about what America was like in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly as it related to food. Malik interviewed his mom, who was born in 1965 and grew up in the late 1970s and early 1980s; Leah talked to her grandfather who was born just after World War II. Malik’s mom told him that all the houses were small but tidy and the yards were well kept. All the moms stayed at home and cooked delicious meals, and all the fathers knew best. Politics seemed much simpler then, at least until the Vietnam War came along. Leah’s grandfather commented on watching the World Series in the afternoon when everyone was at work, and there were not nearly as many football games on TV. They both said the music was much better back then; they could hum the melodies and understand the words. Malik’s mom loved the K.C. and the Sunshine Band’s music; Leah’s grandfather preferred Simon and Garfunkel.
