ABSTRACT

It is generally accepted that we completely understand the formal solutions to sets of coupled linear rate equations. However as with many things in science when we examine something that is well understood more closely we find unexpected problems. Therefore it should not come as a surprise that we encounter difficulties in determining the explicit properties of the formal matrix solution to the linear equations in all but the simplest cases. The existence of these problems are discussed in Section 5.1, because they also arise in obtaining explicit solutions to sets of coupled linear fractional rate equations. We mention this so as to distinguish between the problems associated with understanding the simplest dynamic equations in science and those difficulties uniquely related to complexity.
