ABSTRACT

The proper reverberation time (RT) must be calculated early in the design process long before the architects have completed plans. This early RT check is based on preliminary plans and is a prerequisite to the setting of ceiling and roof heights, also determined early in the process. A detailed understanding of the derivation and assumptions used in the Sabine equation is essential to determining accurate RT calculations. Refer to Chapter 2 for a detailed discussion of its derivation and use. Sabine’s formula is indispensable in determining a high estimate for the RT. In the real world, the RT is almost always 10%–15% lower than calculation would indicate due to unforeseen absorption from duct openings, floor grilles, and potential contractor’s errors in construction.
