ABSTRACT

Families that have not experienced what it means to wear a badge in service of a community may find it difficult to understand the sacrifice and anguish that investigators must endure: the memories of lost innocence that haunt our dreams and thoughts, carefully constructed lives that change forever after the death of a fellow officer, and the ghosts of past events that may drive us or drown us. Empathy is a two-way street that allows each to see and appreciate the leadership of the other.
