ABSTRACT
Although I tried, I failed to shield myself from the families and support law enforcement agencies to resolve their cases. There is nothing more determined than a mother caring for her child, present or missing. Jan Smolinski, in her search for her son Billy, was among the first to reach me on a foundational level. She opened not only my eyes but also my heart and soul to the anguish of the families.
