ABSTRACT

Today, all types of media seem to obsessively cover stories that supposedly feature objective forensic science. However, even the most scientifically rigorous investigative tools, approaches, and techniques may cause problems as well as solve them in UP investigations. For example, statistics released by different entities may include identity confirmations achieved by secondary modalities. Such contradictions, which are confusing to the public and which give false impressions of how such investigations are conducted, must be countered by the development of effective investigative strategies-but not from the perspectives of research scientists or subject matter experts who function as expert witnesses.
