ABSTRACT
The temporary or marginal aquatic habitats inhabited by annual killishes are often subject to a high degree of environmental variation. In addition, many of these habitats reach extremes in environmental parameters that approach the very limits of vertebrate survival. Annual killishes have evolved to exploit their harsh and variable environment as adults and larvae during the rainy season and tolerate or resist environmental stress as embryos during the dry season.
