C LOSER EXAMINATION reveals that the na¨ıve concept of the sedimenting particle considered above needs to be refined in many ways. This second
chapter provides an overview of what we can learn about a particle through AUC, besides its molar mass and friction. We will only present basic concepts, referencing the literature and deferring some in-depth treatments to later chapters.
