ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, it has been mentioned that production follows detailed design. In the later part of detailed design, production drawings and information are generated based on which production planning and production scheduling are carried out. Production is done based on information provided in these design documents. Preparation of these design documents is known as production design or manufacturing design. Manufacturing design has to take into account the production process in the builder’s yard such as materials availability and flow, human resource and skill level in the yard, lifting capacity of assembly blocks and production processes. Therefore, even if an external design consultant provides the design up to basic design stage to a builder, owner or any other client, the builder must have his own design office to prepare the manufacturing drawings and information. The production departments and the design office must work in close coordination to ensure quality, cost control and maintenance of building schedule.
