ABSTRACT
A maritime product or system design requires the understanding of the construction, maintenance, operation and dismantling of the product (discussed in Chapter 1). Therefore, understanding the entire life cycle of a maritime product, from concept to disposal, is necessary. Figure 3.1 shows the life cycle of such a system. Though the time spent on designing the product, sometimes only a few months, is relatively less compared to manufacturing and operating time, the design determines the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the product or venture over the entire lifespan of 15-25 years.
