ABSTRACT

Abstract In this chapter, we study the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols proposed for directional communication in 60 GHz frequency bands. We include the MAC protocols specified in standards such as ECMA-387, IEEE 802.15.3c and IEEE 802.11ad, and MAC protocols proposed in literature as well. We will discuss the various 60 GHz MAC features, such as beamforming protocols, discovery and association mechanisms, relaying, and fallback options in case of unavailability of fragile 60 GHz links for each of the standard MAC protocols. We also present a scheme to select the appropriate access point beamwidth for IEEE 802.11ad Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) employing Carrier Sense Multiple Access using Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA)
