ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 discusses the important issues arising with mass imbalance and the ways in which this can be alleviated by balancing. Rotor bends are also analysed: this is a fault which is often confused with imbalance, and in some instances, it may be appropriate to correct a bend by balancing, but in general, it is important to recognise the essential differences. In this chapter, some further ‘common’ faults in rotating machine are discussed. Whilst these are generally less common than imbalance (the most prevalent single fault), they tend to be somewhat more complex. Furthermore, faults interact and it sometimes becomes difficult to identify the root cause with any degree of certainty.
