ABSTRACT

Integrative functional medicine incorporates a search for all factors impacting each individual’s optimal health, and all factors that interfere are sought out and addressed. Included are social and psychological factors, genetic predispositions, optimal nutrient levels, as well as considerations of gastrointestinal (GI), immune, cardiovascular and mitochondrial function, metabolic and hormonal balancing, and infectious issues. In this chapter we narrow our focus to sex steroids in womenestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone-because these hormones are powerful tools that are often overlooked as potential therapies in both conventional and integrative medicine.
