ABSTRACT

Botanicals, also known as herbs, have been part of the healing traditions of human cultures from ancient times. We usually think of their ability to heal the body but often overlook their potent effect on the mind. Their effect on both body and mind is what makes them quite remarkable and unique. Researchers have found ample evidence to support utilizing botanicals as interventions for mental health, particularly depression. Using herbs for depression has become increasingly common in the population at large. A study from 2001 reported that 54% of individuals interviewed, or more than 2000 people, had taken an herbal remedy to alter their mood.1
