ABSTRACT

Electrochemical processes are predominantly heterogeneous in nature requiring mass transport andinsomecasesthermalreactioncontrol.Theneedforspecialconditionsinelectrosynthesisis thereforeintertwinedwiththecontrolofthemechanismandlinkedeithertotheenhancementof reactionselectivity,conversionrate,orproductyield.Increasinglyhowever,itisalsothesearch forgreenconditionsthatdrivestheexplorationofspecialconditions[1].Forexample,theuseof excess solvents has long been regarded as detrimental to the environment, with an onus to reduce theirquantityorreplacethemwithlesshazardousalternatives.Itisforthisreasonthatsupercritical Žuidsandvarioustypesofroomtemperatureionicliquids(RTILs)arereceivingmuchattentionin standard organic preparations as well as electrosynthesis.
