ABSTRACT

Allocation of a trivial name to a natural product traditionally implies a certain relative stereochemistry in the case of molecules with two or more chiral centres or other stereogenic features, even though at the time of allocation of the name the congurations may not be known. Known diastereomers may be given different trivial names or may be distinguished by prexes such as epi-, allo-and epiallo-. Traditionally, such prexes were italicised and separable (epiallo-Corynantheine, indexed under C). Modern practice is for them to be inseparable: for example Epiallocorynantheine, indexed under E (see Section 4.6).
