ABSTRACT

It is important for providers at all levels to understand the basic concepts of strength and conditioning. Whether in the training room or the primary care clinic, patients present with a variety of musculoskeletal complaints. From sporting injuries to degenerative joint disease, many conditions may benet from the appropriate application of strength and conditioning concepts. These injuries may also be the result of preventable training errors related to strength and conditioning. Having a general knowledge of strength and conditioning concepts will help primary care providers at all levels identify basic training errors, make adjustments to recreational tness programs, and understand when referral to a strength and conditioning professional is indicated. Furthermore, knowing what modications need to be made for common special populations can be key to ensuring their success and preventing injury (Table 39.1).
