ABSTRACT

Primary care providers in a multitude of professional settings encounter patients and athletes with physical and intellectual (ID) disabilities. It is our obligation to provide the same encouragement for participation and quality care that we do for able-bodied athletes. Summarizing the critical sports medicine information for disabled athletes is a complex task due to the wide range of disabilities and levels of competition. This chapter will address common issues while acknowledging that there are differences between recreational disabled athletes and highly competitive elite disabled athletes. Thus, this chapter

will initially review terminology and common considerations for disabled athletes of all types. The chapter will then detail clinical considerations for specic populations according to different types of disabilities (Table 67.1).
