ABSTRACT

Intermediate hosts are infected by feeding sporocysts that can be mixed in grain or suspended in a small volume at the back of the tongue to avoid spillage. The age of the animal does not appear to affect infectivity; 1-day-old calves, goats, or lambs, as well as older animals are easily infected with Sarcocystis. Inoculated animals should be kept in isolation for 10 days, and all the waste and bedding should be incinerated to kill sporocysts that might pass through the gut unexcysted and be excreted in the feces136,381,1257 where they can be infectious to other animals.
