ABSTRACT

Although there are numerous reports of muscular Sarcocystis infections in New World monkeys943,961,1428 and Old World monkeys,477,795,939,943,1104,1112,1175,1737 only 3 species have been named (Table 5.1). Morphological studies of sarcocysts indicate that there are more. In a review of histologic sections from 744 monkeys, including 374 captive wild monkeys, 4 structurally distinct sarcocysts were found in 21% of the wild captive monkeys, but none was found in laboratory-raised monkeys.943 Identication of the species of the sarcocysts in primates is difcult because the denitive hosts are not known. Mehlhorn et al.1175 reported 3 species of Sarcocystis, with thin-walled cysts found in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), baboons (Papio cynocephalus), and tamarins (Sanuinus oedipus), were ultrastructurally distinct (Table 5.1).
