ABSTRACT

GEU has been operating a very large animal care and use program (ACUP) for over 10 years. The organization’s IACUC oversees approximately 425 protocols, which are facilitated by approximately 120 research scientists. During the semiannual facility inspections, the IACUC frequently discovers activities that do not comply with the regulations and policies. For example, during a spring inspection, IACUC members discovered that a scientist conducting rodent surgeries was not maintaining appropriate surgery and postoperative records. The inspections also disclosed that some scientists were beginning procedures on animals before they received IACUC approval and, in some instances, deviations from approved procedures were occurring. Upon completion of a cycle of semiannual inspections, the inspection team referred three potential cases of noncompliance to the IACUC for investigation.
