GEU boasts a comprehensive animal research program that includes scientists actively engaged in field research that involves, for example, wild rodents. In fact, Dr. Smith’s research program focuses on vole speciation (i.e., the identification of new species of voles in the Americas). As part of her research, Dr. Smith travels to remote locations throughout North, South, and Central America to trap voles. Once the animals are trapped, tissue samples are collected and sent to the laboratory for genetic analysis. On occasion, Dr. Smith will euthanize and retain an animal cadaver as a reference specimen (i.e., voucher specimen).
