ABSTRACT

A major research institute in southern Texas, Tri Bio, was preparing to contend with a category 2 hurricane. A number of mice that were a critical component of research activities supported through millions of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research dollars were housed in the vivarium basement. The tower vivarium facility was used to maintain foundation stocks of these extremely valuable strains of transgenic mice, which were housed nowhere else in the world. Without these mice, multiple research activities could not be conducted and millions of dollars would need to be returned to the granting agency.
