GEU’s animal care and use program is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) international. In addition, GEU maintains an animal welfare assurance that was negotiated with and approved by the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). Dr. Dale Heaton, a GEU molecular biologist, was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a novel protein to be used in diabetes therapy. Although his research involves in vivo experiments, Dr. Heaton will conduct only the in vitro research at GEU. Dr. Heaton’s protein will be evaluated in rabbits by his colleagues at Meyer’s Biologics.
