ABSTRACT

The gene’s point of view can chart the changes in the biota, but that does not mean it can explain them. We can chart changes in a game of baseball by charting the positions of players. This will not explain why the changes take place. Yet any change in the game will involve players being in different locations. When we are seeking to understand why the game evolved the way it did, we need to know the features that caused the changes; player positions are often caused by changes rather than causing changes. A dropped catch will cause different changes than a good catch.
