ABSTRACT
In On the Origin of Species, Darwin presented in various forms, a key argument for evolution by natural selection. One example of the argument is the following from the first edition of The Origin (1859, p. 5)*:
This argument is very much worth pulling apart. Seeing how it works will show us a lot about the structure of the theory of natural selection as Darwin understood it.
