ABSTRACT

The structure differs at the fovea which consists only of the retinal pigment epithelium, photoreceptors, external limiting membrane, outer nuclear layer, inner fibres of the photoreceptors and the inner limiting membrane. The retina is divided by the outer plexiform layer so that the inner half receives its blood supply from the central retinal artery and the outer half closest to the choroid is supplied by the choroid capillaries derived from the ciliary vasculature. Age-related macular degeneration is a common retinal degeneration occurring in the elderly population. Angioid streaks are small cracks in the retina which renders the retina susceptible to the development of new blood vessel growth and scar formation. The neurosensory retina is susceptible to pathologic separation from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium due to the presence of a tear or hole in the retina or due to traction or degeneration changes. Optical coherence tomography images the retina providing important diagnostic information.
