ABSTRACT

Scientically correct hemograms of Macaca mulatta representing standard, unperturbed physiologic conditions would be presumed to be derived from analyses when the following conditions are in place: the monkeys are healthy, captive, laboratory-bred adult, nongravid subjects of a single sex, perhaps 4-15  years of age. Single housing is likely preferable for many experimental circumstances. The subjects should have been familiarized with the test laboratory setting for perhaps 3 months prior to study. The monkeys should be successfully trained for handling and to be cooperative for a stress-free phlebotomy. The tests should be performed on fasting subjects (~12-16 hr) in the absence of pretesting sedative medication. The hemograms would ideally be determined more than once on a given individual or longitudinally monitored to establish mean values. The analyses should employ contemporary electronic methods.
