ABSTRACT

The presence of ionizing radiation may be a significant threat to the correct operation of electronic devices, both in the terrestrial environment, due to atmospheric neutrons and radioactive contaminants inside chip materials, or, to a much larger extent, in space, because of trapped particles, particles emitted by the Sun, and galactic cosmic rays. Artificial man-made radiation generated in biomedical devices, nuclear power plants, and high-energy physics experiments is another reason to carefully study radiation effects in electronic components.
