ABSTRACT
In this book we present methods for preparing monolayer and multilayer films that depend on formation of the films on water surface and their transfer onto solid substrates.
In Chapter 1, we have related the general outlines of how the Langmuir monolayer is formed by spreading it on water. Some materials spread spontaneously on water but most need a spreading solvent. It is desirable that the solvent should be capable of dispersing the molecules of the film-forming material at the air-water interface and then evaporate completely so that the film is not contaminated. Hence, the spreading solvent chosen is volatile and insoluble in water. Typical examples are chloroform, methanol, benzene or a suitable mixture of these solvents.
