ABSTRACT

Veterinary pharmaceuticals serve an important role in preserving and restoring animal health, thereby also enhancing human well being. Efficient development of safe and effective new animal drugs and continued availability of approved products is essential to maintenance of animal health and productivity. Products reflect the methods of drug administration most closely aligned to the lifestyle and husbandry practices for the targeted animal species. The drug is gradually released from the sites, allowing for monthly application for the control of fleas and ticks. Economics plays an important role in animal treatment decisions. While, for owners of a beloved dog or cat, cost considerations may be less important, most animal health care is not covered by insurance. Antimicrobial resistance negatively impacts both the current use and future development of pharmaceuticals for animals. Bioequivalence studies and tissue residue depletion studies are conducted in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice regulations.
