ABSTRACT

Generally, characters and their actions are the most crucial clues in movies and teleplays. Therefore, face detection, character identification, human tracking, and so on, become very important in content-based movie and teleplay analysis and retrieval. Meanwhile, the characters are often the most important contents to be indexed in a feature-length movie; thus, character identification becomes a critical step in film semantic analysis, and it is also reasonable to use character names as cataloguing items. In this chapter, we describe how to recognize characters in movies and teleplays, and then use character names as cataloguing items for intelligent catalogues.
