According to NFPA 1142 Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting:
The key point to note about a dry hydrant is that water has to be drawn from the supply (lake, pond, reservoir, tank) by a fire pumper through a pipe that is typically located underground. A dry hydrant must have a reliable water supply (Figure 4.1).
