ABSTRACT

In order to widen the medical and industrial applications of volatiles (essential oils), it is necessary to lower the volatility of the compounds to obtain a longer shelf life of products containing volatiles. However, due to the many contradictory reports on the activity/nonactivity of volatile compounds toward a biological system, a prolonged-release formulation of volatiles would also be of great interest to basic research. The short contact time of the volatiles with a biological system may render it difcult to verify a biological effect, and this could be changed by, for instance, encapsulation of the volatile compounds before biological testing.
