ABSTRACT

The term “plasmonics” was used for the rst time in 2001, for the Atwater research group to name the eld of study of the unique optical properties of metallic nanostructures and the development of new devices based on the manipulation of light at the nanoscale (Maier et al. 2001). The optical properties of the metallic nanoparticles are derived from their ability to support a surface plasmon resonance (SPR), which is the coherent oscillation of the free conduction band electrons in resonance with an incident electromagnetic eld (Homola et al. 2010).
