ABSTRACT

Nut is a culinary term encompassing several different varieties, including nuts (e.g., chestnut); seeds (e.g., sesame, Brazil nut); legumes (e.g., peanut); and drupes (e.g., almond, coconut, pistachio, and walnut). Nuts can also be classied as tree nuts (e.g., almond, pecan, pistachio, and walnut) and ground nuts (e.g., peanut). They are grown all over the world, with peanut being the most economically important (Danyluk et  al., 2007). In the United States, tree nuts (e.g., almond, Brazil nut, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pistachio, walnut) consumption is approximately 4.0 lb/capita (USDA, 2012). For peanut and peanut products (e.g., peanut butter or peanut candy), consumption is approximately 7.0 lb/capita (USDA, 2013).
