ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the following topics: Time studies and Spaghetti diagrams. Time studies are by far the most common and simplest way to provide insight on the work being performed during a setup and the time associated with each action. More than likely, there will be differences in how they work, and it is this variation in work that is used to identify best practices as well. Spaghetti diagrams are one of the easiest forms of data analysis in Lean, and they can provide insight on how much motion and transportation is going on in the area. Each one of these steps requires motion and transportation and over the course of a day can add up to a lot of travel distance depending on the frequency of setups. Even if the number of trips a day is low, motion and transportation in our example represent around 15% of the overall setup time.
