ABSTRACT
Safety engineering uses a term to help assess the robustness of the system. Factor of safety (FoS), or safety factor (SF), describes the capability of the system to operate beyond its intended operating environment. The SF is how much extra force can be applied to the system before failure occurs. To achieve high reliability with significant variation, we design in an SF. How much SF is needed is dependent on the risks that we will accept.
