ABSTRACT

In Chapters 1 through 11, we learned about capability, and now we will learn how Deming’s theories used in highreliability organizations (HROs) help us understand healthcare’s complexity better. Deming’s coaching to take a systems approach is explained using his Theory of Escaping Defects and a concept named rolled throughput yield (RTY), which has been taught in reliability classes and Six Sigma for years. We will relate these concepts to those of value streams, a term that is commonly used by some healthcare organizations.
