ABSTRACT

We have used data mining and analytics techniques in several of our efforts in social media. For example, in Section II, we discuss algorithms for location-based data mining that will extract the location of the various social media (e.g., Twitter) users. These algorithms can be extended to extract other demographics data. Our prior research has also developed data mining tools for sentiment analysis. In Section III, we illustrate how the various data mining techniques can be applied on social media data to extract sensitive information about the various individuals and consequently violate privacy. While we have described the various data mining techniques we have developed or utilized, in this chapter we provide some background information about general data mining techniques so that the reader can have an understanding of the field.
