ABSTRACT

Treatment Prexes are tags at the beginning of words that modify the word. Many medical terms contain prexes and although it is not always possible to judge what particular prex should be used, they are useful to learn as they do have specic meanings. Some relate to parts of the body such as these:

adeno-gland adip-fat angi-vessel brachi-arm cost-rib hepat-liver ment-chin my-muscle nephr-kidney ot-ear pleur-rib rachi-spine sarco-esh/muscle stoma-mouth

Some relate to position on the body:

ante-before, forward, in front of anti-against

endo-inside, within epi-on, outer

inter-between, among intra-within, inside

peri-near, surrounding post-aer

pre-before sub-under, below, beneath

trans-across, over, through

Other prexes found in medicine are more general and are used in other disciplines and in everyday English. ese prexes relate to the presence and absence of something and strength and similarity, and they can also have positive or negative connotations.
