ABSTRACT

Biochemistry is the study of the biological processes that occur in organisms. In the scope of biochemistry and molecular biology, biochemistry examines the structure-function relationships in biomolecules, whereas molecular biology examines information transfer between biomolecules. More specically, biochemistry seeks to generate an understanding of how biomolecules contribute to the processes that drive all functions in prokaryotes, archaea, and eukaryotes. This chapter will begin with an examination of the structure of DNA and RNA and then proceed through an overview of other biomolecules, specically proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, and will conclude with an introduction and overview of several basic metabolic pathways.
