ABSTRACT

Most of the molecules discussed in the context of chemical reactions in the previous chapters have only one functional group, although nomenclature rules have included a handful of molecules (particularly products of key reactions like the aldol condensation) with two or more functional groups. Indeed, most of the reactions discussed thus far show the transformation of one functional group into another or the formation of one carbon-carbon bond using molecules that each contains a single functional group. As seen in Chapter 22, however, both the aldol condensation and Claisen condensation yield products that have two or more functional groups (diketone, ketone-ester, ketone-alcohol, ketone-alkene, etc.).
