ABSTRACT

In this chapter, MD is used to calculate the kinetic coefficients for the growth of surface islands of a new phase (Section 6.2). The obtained coefficients are used in the next few sections for solving the microscopic kinetic equations of cluster growth (Section 6.3) for rarefied absorption layers. A two-dimensional (2D) surface density of adsorbed atoms is introduced as follows: n = N/N0, where N is the number of adatoms and N0 is the number of possible absorption sites. Another name for 2D density is coverage.
