ABSTRACT

As discussed, the current state map documents how a company is currently doing business and is the basis for designing a future state and initiating true Value Stream Management. To begin creating the current state map, the mapping team needs to understand not only the logistics of drawing the map, but also what metrics to select to measure the effectiveness of the value stream in terms of cost, service, and quality. For the purpose of this workbook, we chose seven steps to help the team in both of these areas (see Box 5.1). In this chapter, we concentrate mostly on Step 3, selecting process metrics. In Chapter 6, we will apply all seven steps to the Quick Loan Bank case study. As the mapping team moves forward, these steps should be used as a guideline to create a current state map.
